A clean coffee machine is not just about hygiene – it is one of the biggest factors affecting the quality of your espresso. Coffee oils are acidic and go rancid quickly. If they build up inside your machine, every shot you pull will taste bitter, flat, or just off. The good news is that keeping your machine clean is straightforward once you know the steps.
Daily Cleaning: What You Should Do Every Day
Daily maintenance does not take long and prevents the worst of the buildup. After each session:
- Wipe the steam wand immediately after use with a damp cloth and purge it briefly
- Remove the portafilter, knock out the puck, and rinse the basket under hot water
- Wipe down the group head gasket with a damp brush or cloth
- Empty and rinse the drip tray
This takes about two minutes and makes the deeper weekly and monthly cleans much easier.
Weekly Cleaning: Backflushing Your Machine
Backflushing pushes water backwards through the group head to flush out coffee oils and residue from the solenoid valve and internal pathways. It is essential for any machine with a three-way solenoid (most prosumer and commercial machines have one – single boiler machines without a solenoid cannot be backflushed).
Once a week, do a chemical backflush using an espresso machine cleaning tablet or powder. Place the chemical in the blind basket and run 5-6 cycles of 10 seconds each, rinsing with plain water at the end. This removes the oils that water alone cannot shift.

Cleaning Tablets vs Powder: What to Use
Both tablets and powder work well for backflushing. Tablets are more convenient because the dose is pre-measured. Powder is often cheaper per use and can be useful for soaking portafilters and baskets as well.
Popular options include Cafetto, Puly Caff, and Urnex. Always use a cleaner specifically designed for espresso machines – dishwasher tablets and general degreasers are not suitable and can damage seals.
Soak your portafilter basket in a solution of hot water and espresso cleaning powder for 20-30 minutes weekly. This removes the stubborn brown residue that builds up inside the basket holes. Rinse thoroughly before using again.
Monthly: Descaling Your Machine
Descaling removes mineral scale (calcium and magnesium deposits) that builds up inside the boiler, heating elements, and pipes. Scale reduces heating efficiency, damages components over time, and can affect the taste of your coffee.
In Brisbane, tap water tends to be moderately hard, so descaling every 1-2 months is a good rule of thumb. If you use filtered or softened water, you can stretch this to every 3-4 months.

Signs Your Machine Needs Cleaning
Even if you are on a regular cleaning schedule, watch for these signs that something needs attention:
- Espresso tastes more bitter or sour than usual
- Extraction time has changed without any adjustment to your grind
- The machine is taking longer to heat up
- Steam pressure feels weaker than normal
- You can see brown residue on the group head gasket
Regular cleaning extends the life of your machine and keeps every cup tasting the way it should. It is one of the easiest ways to protect your investment and ensure the quality of the coffee you are making at home.
